Dental extractions may be called for if there is too much damage or decay for a tooth to be repaired. There are two kinds of extractions: simple and surgical. Simple extractions are common. They are performed on teeth that can be seen in the mouth. The dentist first loosens the tooth, then removes it. A surgical extraction is performed on a tooth that may have broken at the gumline and may require bone removal to remove the tooth.
